Please help Mike Brink with the speech and physical therapy he really needs
Description:
In April 2006, my cousin Mike Brink was in a dirt bike accident while riding with friends at the dunes on the California/Nevada border. He had such severe injuries that he was given a 5% chance of surviving the airlift to the trauma center in Las Vegas. The injuries Mike suffered left him a quadraplegic, and also brain damaged from the lack of blood flow and oxygen to the brain. This brain damage affected Mike's arm and hand movement, and also his speech. Mike spent 7 months in Las Vegas at a trauma center and then a rehabilitation facility. His mother spent day and night with him ensuring he was getting quality care, speaking for him, praying with him, and encouraging him to stay strong. Because of Mike's fierce fighting spirit and his refusal to never give up, he is now moving his right arm, putting it where he wants it to go. His left arm is beginning to have movement and his speech is returning slowly. Throughout this ordeal Mike has retained his same funny personality. He is an amazing person! All of this has been so devastating for our family, and especially for Mike's daughter, Clarissa, who was only 15 when this tragedy occurred. I am writing to all of you to ask for your much needed support in getting Mike the therapy he needs to regain some use of his hands so he can feed himself, brush his teeth, etc., and continue to improve his speech with additional speech therapy. The expense involved in the therapy, medical supplies, hospital bills, prescriptions, and transport way exceeds the amount he receives from social security disability and Medicare. Mike is also in great need of a transport van to get him to therapy and appointments. The state medical transport system is very undependable and he has missed appointments due to them arriving too early, too late, or not at all. He and his wonderful caregiver, Julie, have been stranded at a doctor's office several times because transport did not return to take them home. My family and I cannot thank you enough for your help and emotional support. We pray for the day that Mike will be able to transfer himself from bed to wheelchair, and to be able to use an electric wheelchair. I would like you all to know that donations are processed through a verified paypal account. It is a very quick, easy and secure way to donate, and you can track the progress of this fundraiser every step of the way. In addition, the site is on the Better Business Bureau's list of legitimate fundraising sites. Please feel free to pass along our fundraiser to your family and friends so we can continue to help Mike win this fight. Thank you all for your generosity and support. With love and gratitude, Gina Sorensen (and Mike's entire family!)
