Jeff's story is one of the hardest things to write, everyone is in utter disbelief. We'll start by writing about one of the most inspirational things many have ever had the privilege of witnessing, headed-up by none other than Jeff himself. This last January a best friend from high school, Jason Decent, was diagnosed with brain cancer. Jeff began the fundraiser for Jason and rallied all his friends to start sending it out to everyone they knew. Amazingly in less than a week, the $10,000 goal was met! Setting the sights higher and knowing Jason would need more financial support, Jeff set the goal to $18,500 and asked people to look into their hearts to contribute once again. That goal was again surpassed in just another week. Maybe it's because we live in New York City, but selflessness is not something one sees every day. Times are no doubt tough for everyone these days, but the out pouring of love and money to help Jason with his situation was truly inspirational. Jeff has always put others before himself, never once fluctuating from this belief. He is a kind caring and loving person, reaching out to help all of those around him. Whether it was dropping everything to help a family member in need states away, or volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House in Minneapolis, Jeff has always reached out to those in need.

Fast forward six months later to present day. On Monday June 6th Jeffrey Michael Tomczek was diagnosed with Leukemia. After a few weeks of feeling short of breath and extreme fatigue Jeff decided it was best to visit the ER at Bellevue hospital. He was admitted right away after his initial blood test showed his hemoglobin level was at an astonishing 4.7 mg/dl (normal levels are 12-14 mg/dl and transfusions are normally given when a patient reaches 8 mg/dl). After hearing the news Jeff's family, his parents Janet and David, and his brother Matt flew in to be by his side. They have always been an extremely tight knit family and would have been there the moment he stepped into the ER had it not been for the miles separating them. Everyone hoped that further tests would show Jeff's anemia was being caused by a simple iron deficiency or some other easily treated disease. Sadly, a bone marrow tap was done that Monday and confirmed the worst, Jeff has been diagnosed with the ALL Philadelphia strand of Leukemia at the age of 27. This specific version is the toughest and most tenacious of the types of Leukemia and is going to be an extremely long road for Jeff.

Anyone that knows Jeff knows he is not only determined but as stubborn as can be, in a good way of course ;) So if there is anyone that can beat this, it's certainly him. His doctors are very confident he will respond well to treatment and do well with chemotherapy. However, Jeff does need our help. Beyond the immediate expenses of the hospital stay which is going to be at minimum a month, the sheer cost of the medication and continued treatments for the next 2 years is staggering. Between all of the regular chemotherapy visits, medications, blood tests, and transfusions that are going to need to be done over the next 2 years, the amount of medical bills is going to be staggering. The average cost of just one round of chemotherapy treatment is upwards of $150,000. Jeff will be going through these for 2 years.

So please find it in your heart to give anything you can to help Jeff beat this thing. Send this to everybody you know and tell them your favorite moment with Jeff at a concert, a Brewer's tailgate, playing soccer, or enjoying a cold one. I spent my day at the Dana Farber cancer center in Boston with my dad who was just diagnosed with lung cancer. My mother had a brain tumor, so I've got some experience and know cancer is a bitch, but from what I've seen on your wall, you'll have a great support system by your side while you beat it. There were kind strangers who helped me raise funds to get treatment for my mom who battled myelodysplasia (blood cancer similar to leukemia) in 2004. I feel your pain. I will include Jeff in my thoughts and prayers to stray strong as he battles this disease.
